Can't believe it is the end of the 1st week. It has been very fruitful. I had one-on-one classes for Tuesday. On Wednesday a student from Denmark joined me in the class. He is a medical student and is taking courses in Spanish for the fun of it for several months. He is traveling with 4 other Danish medical students, who are also taking Spanish. Two of them will work in a clinic in Cuzco, Peru just before I get there. I don't know much Spanish, but he knows even less, which tended to slow down the class. To fix the problem, I signed up for one-on-one classes for the rest of my tenure here and hope to do the same in Peru. That way I know I will get out of this venture what I put into it. I am really enjoying the lessons and believe I am improving exponentially. Of course, my baseline was not very high!
Tomorrow I plan to take a bus to Banos, a city outside of Quito, which is suppose to be beautiful. Since it is a 3 hour bus ride from Quito, I plan on spending the night. The school has recommended some hotels which cost...get this!...$5.00-$8.00. Supposedly they are 3-star hotels. If you are a turisa, of course, the cost is much more! The town is somewhat of a tourist town with a lot to do. I met some people on the Galapagos trip who said not to miss Banos, Otavalo, and Iberra. So I will probably see Otavala next weekend. So far the food has been great....very similar to what we eat in the US. Of course they have their plantains and fried foods, but my "family" is more health conscious and we eat great. Fresh juice (of a kind which we do not have in the US) every day. Have a great weekend. Will blog at the end of the weekend! Love all!
