Well, I arrived this PM in Cairns at 3:30PM. I can't believe how much it looks like Hawaii! It has mountains and is very tropical. The temperature is around 88 and very, very humid! The city population is only 130,000 and the prices show it...very touristy area and prices are high! We went to a
vietnamese restaurant and salt and pepper calamari was $17.00!! Ugh...Needless to say we did not order it (based on principal - at homeit is $8.95 in most places - we felt ripped off)and only had some spring rolls. There are no other Vietnamese restaurants in town. It is the same for other types of restaurants. You would think that lamb would be inexpensive since it comes from here and New Zealand, but guess what..a lamb dinner is about $27-$35. We could not find kangaroo or any of the exotic meats, but will continue the quest.
The hotel is beautiful...right on the water. Cairns is a very pretty, small beach town. We walked to town tonight and saw thousands of bats hanging from the trees along the main street. The trees and the bats were huge. They were flying around while it was still light and hung from the trees during the dark (unusal).
The plane ride was not too bad, only because the food was good and they executed the service very well. Otherwise, I was stuck in a middle seat with no room. There was no more room on Quantas than on United. The flight to Sydney from LA was 13 hours and from Sydney to Cairns was 4 hours.
I met three other women on the tour that are single and we went out to scour the town tonight. One is from Baltimore and two from California. Well, will run and not run on. Just wanted you to know I finally got here and am safe. Tomorrow is the start of the adventure! Talk to you later. Luv u...me
